Acne is a photo-responsive condition.
Intense Pulsed Light systems have different wavelengths meaning both bacteria and sebaceous glands can be targeted.
Shorter wavelengths have been shown to destroy the propionobacterium acnes (p.acnes) bacteria that cause acne.
The red and infared wavelemgths directly target the overactive sebaceous glands.

Treatment works as the blood vessels absorb the light energy that is applied to the skin.
The light heats up the vessels. They will then either collapse (vessel blanching) or coagulate (vessel darkening).
Over the following weeks, the damaged vessels are absorbed naturally the body. The vessels that darken will be cleared away by the white blood cells.
Sometimes re-vascularisation occurs with much smaller and less visible capillaries.

This treatment offers a solution for all the visible signs of ageing caused by sun damage, such as brown spots, redness, skin texture, lines and wrinkles.
The 3 different wavelengths are required to target haemoglobin, melanin and water/collagen.
Precisely controlled short pulses of light are released that target discolouration to create a more youthful, even complexion.
The light also results in the stimulation of the fibroblast cells leading to increased production of collagen and elastin. The texture of the skin is therefore which evens out lump, bumps, lines and wrinkles.
- 28
The treatment causes mild, reversible thermal damage to the epidermis. The skin acts to repair this by increasing the rate of collagen and elastin production.

There will be 3 stages of healing.
Inflammation stage: 2-3 days after treatment. This is the body’s natural response to injury. The vessels in the wound bed contract and form a clot. They then dilate and essential cells can reach the area. This is why there are signs of inflammation on the skin are present.
Tissue Proliferation: 3-6 days after treatment. The wound is rebuilt with new granulation tissue which is comprised of collagen and extracellular matrix. New blood vessels develop. The healthy granulation tissue is dependent on the fibroblast recovering oxygen and nutrients supplied by the blood vessels
Maturation and remodeling: 4-6 weeks after treatment. This occurs once the wound had closed. The collaged is remodeled from type 3 to type 1. Cellular activity reduced and the number of blood vessels decrease again. Collagen type 3 matures and remodels which tightens the skin.
